Lyndon state: Why i Came here

Lyndon is a rare example of a college that is in the middle of nowhere but has strong programs that attract students from across the country. The television studies department, soon to become electronic journalism arts, is one of the few professional programs that draw these students.
Aaron Kormos, a sophomore at Lyndon, transferred here from the University of Connecticut at the start of this year to pursue his degree in TVS. Going into his freshman year at UConn, he was undecided as to which major he would choose. After taking a few general education courses, Kormos decided the path he wanted to follow was a concentration in television production. UConn did not offer this degree, so the college search began again for Kormos, this time as a transfer student.
Kormos found advice in his friend Tyler who was a student at Lyndon at the time. Tyler recommended LSC to him because it is one of a select group of colleges in the country to offer this program. Kormos decided that Lyndon appeared to be the right place for him. Kormos says he is quite pleased with the small class sizes and personable relationships he has with his professors.
One of those professors, Meaghan Meachem, a graduate of LSC, has similar feelings about the college. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Television Studies, and finished her education by receiving a master’s degree in Web communication.
Meachem has now returned to Lyndon as a member of the faculty. This is her second year as a professor here and she decided to make her return to the campus because of her familiarity with the school and love for the TVS program.
Television Studies is not the only professional program that excites students about the college. The Atmospheric Science major also brings students into the school from across the country. One freshman this year, Meaghan Fried, made the trek from the state of Montana to attend this education institution.
The ATM department is considered one of the best in the country, and the school’s student chapter of the American Meteorological Society consistently wins chapter of the year for their work putting on the Northeastern Storm Conference.
The Exercise Science department is another one of the strong and unique offerings at Lyndon. Exercise Science was recently certified by CAAHAP (the commission on accreditation of allied health programs) and NSCA (The National Strength and Conditioning association). LSC is one of only five colleges in the country to have both certifications for their exercise science program.
In spite of Lyndon’s small size and relative lack of recognition from people outside of the area as a high quality college, students are frequently pleased with their experience there.

Newspaper video critique

The first newspaper website I looked at was USAtoday.com. I found that their video offerings were very organized and well presented. On the home page they have a tab for video that brings you to their video page. Once there it offers tabs along the top that include news, sports, travel, and so on. When you click one of these it leaves the layout the same and brings up a section of videos, each category having sub-categories. so if you want to look at NFL videos you can go to sports, then NFL on the right and it will bring up only videos pertaining to the NFL. I liked this layout a lot, it was easy to use and you can find exactly what your looking for fast. Here's the link to USA Todays video page.

The second one I looked at was washingtonpost.com. This was much more confusing and not helpful at all. After i finally found the video page ( it was under the news tab when you rolled over it) I found it very cluttered. The first problem was that it was labeled photo/video. Then once there you had to click video in another place to get to the video page. Then when you finally reach the vido page it is cluttered and not very organized. There are no previews of the video so you have to go by what the headline says and if it says video next to it. Overall it was not laid out well and was not very user friendly. Here's the link to their video page.

iReport critique

when i looked at iReport.com there were some things i liked and some things i didn't. Overall i thought it was a good site and laid things out nicely. The only part I didn't like was how the menu bar was underneath the original CNN.com menu. I like the idea of the site as it lets you see what is interesting to the people living in our country. The news is just a generalization of what is important while this site lets users take control. From what i can see the differences between the videos actually aired on CNN and the ones that aren't is that the ones that are have a relevance to the country and are thought out and not just a stupid article written by somebody messing around.

Fish slideshow

Slideshows and photo gallery

http://gallery.me.com/chris_stewart#100186&view=grid&bgcolor=black&sel=55

This is the photo gallery that i chose to critique. Its a gallery put together by a community to showcase their cars. It is all about volvo s60r's and v70r's. I absolutely love these cars. they just have such a sexy look. The gallery was made with mobile me and you can basically do whatever you want with it. You can change the the layout of the pictures, you can view it as a slideshow in multiple ways and you can download the pictures.

Here is a skateboarding slideshow with no music. Its not that great, the person who did it put in a bunch of pictures from a video game which i dont really like. It has one great picture of bb burnquist jumping off a ramp into the grand canyon with a parachute on his back. One of the most amazing things a skateboarder has ever done. I think if it had music it would make it flow a little bit better, and wuld suggest to the creator that he try that next time.

Here is my second slideshow with music. It is another skateboarding one that is all about some of the best moments in sketboarding. It is good overall , the images are good quality but i dont think the music fits that well. could have used something different.

Podcast Write up

Despite a disappointing departure on the court, senior basketball players reminisce fondly on the season.

Two seniors in the basketball program have said goodbye to their respective teams after a disappointing end to the season for both teams. Jacob Freeman has played several seasons with the men's team, while Shauna Buck played one season with the Lady Hornets.

Forward Jacob Freeman, who played three years for the hornets, said he thinks the season ended too soon. "We set off to a good start, but it didn't workout for us. The season definitely came to a fast close. I'm disappointed it's over because it's my senior year and last year playing varsity basketball. No regrets though."

Freeman did not have an opportunity to play much this season, and said he was surprised he was unable to make more of a contribution to the team.

“He(Coach Krupinski) told me he'd like me on the team at the beginning of the season, but then he didn't give me a reason I didn't play”, said Freeman. “That makes me think: what could I have done better? Did I not do something that prevented me from getting playing time?"

Even though he had a frustrating senior season, Freeman still has fond memories of his time at Lyndon.

"The first thing I would like to say is Circle! Circle!" he said. "Aside from that, going up against some of the big division one schools such as Dartmouth was really great".

"Everyone could talk to anyone, even the women's team," he said. "We meshed so well that altogether the chemistry was awesome. I hope the relationships I have with my teammates carry into the future, I know I'll be back every year at alumni games."

Speaking of the women, Coach Maloney anticipated playing the season without a senior on the roster, until Shauna Buck approached him and asked to join the team. Buck said she decided to play because she didn't want to regret not playing varsity basketball in college.

"I didn't have any expectations coming into the season and things played out really well," she said.

Buck says that she enjoyed the comraderie of the team.

"The team chemistry was awesome," she said. "Because there were only seven of us, we got really close. It was so much fun. Even in practice, when we were supposed to be serious, we were laughing and had inside jokes. If you're not friends it isn't fun."

Buck said she regrets not playing all four years, and hopes incoming women who are interested in playing go for it.

Looking ahead to next year, Freeman says he hopes younger players improve and the team can break the curse of falling short down the stretch. Freeman says this may have to do with a small coaching staff.

"We are kind of understaffed," he said. "Coach Krupinski plays multiple roles in practice and recruiting. It's funny how in Lyndon history we do great, and then at the end of the season we just go straight down. "

VT Digger Critique

When i first went to the site i noticed right away the heading. It is just the name of the site, but is nice and big so you cant miss it. The overall layout of the site is very nice and easy to figure out. They have sections on the right side almost like the sections of a newspaper. On the left is mostly stuff about the site and how they get money ect.

Their business model is a non-profit business model. This means they make no money and get all their funds from donations sponsorships and grants. The site is free right now but someday they hope to have certain special sections that you would have to pay a small fee for. They have gotten a few grants so far and are working on raising more money.

Most of the stories seem to well written and kept my attention. One in particular that caught my eye was one about the mind and everyone's stress levels and emotional happiness. It was a very interesting story. There seemed to be a few stories dealing with philosophy and things like that. Those are things that interest me so i would probably visit this website often. I think it would be a great idea to do a multimedia project for this website.

Student "cries wolf" on sexual assualt

Blurb- Alleged sexual assault turns out to be a fake

Early Tuesday morning around 1:00 a.m. a sexual assault was reported by a student. The report said that a unidentified male had climbed through an open window in Stonehenge. There was no details of what the suspect looked like or any witnesses. After investigating further the report turned out to be false.

When the call went out tuesday night Public safety responded immediately. They sent out two officers, two student officers and contacted the RHD on duty. The state police were also notified and they sent three officers and a canine to search the area. They also sent four detectives to start the investigation.

After being investigated by the police the report was confirmed as false. President Carol Moore promptly sent out an e-mail to assure everyone that there was no assault and the campus was secure. Director of public safety George Hacking confirmed this and went on to say that charges would be filed against the student.

Hacking felt that students should know the report was false and that, " we are as safe today as we were before the report came in."  He went on to say that public safety knows there are ways to get into the buildings if you really want to. He also said that it then becomes students responsibilities to shut and lock windows and doors.

Public safety will be stepping up their patrols of Stonehenge and are trying to learn from the incident. They would like anyone that sees someone prop open the door or leave a window open to report them.
